FEO: January 2009: How to Get Attention from Funders and Donors in These Challenging
Posted by ESCstaff on Friday, February 06 @ 18:47:31 EST
FEO

By Marge Nichols, ESC Consultant and former Director of Research, United Way

As all nonprofit leaders know first-hand, times are tough. Funders and donors have less money to give, and they are constantly making tough decisions about how to spend their money. There is one important ingredient to any proposal that will help you convince them they should be spending their money on your organization—data.

With a little research, you can arm your proposals and presentations with information that can’t be ignored: recent facts and figures about the problem and the population your program will address. The right data will get donors’ attention and help sell your message.

This article provides some easy tips for how to find and use data to make your proposal stand out among the rest in these challenging times.

Success in benefit event management begins with a clear definition of its purpose.  What specific goals is the event designed to accomplish?  The answers will define what criteria will be used to measure the success of its outcomes.  Will it improve the organization’s visibility, public image and reputation through increased media coverage?  Will it increase volunteer participation and develop trained leaders for the future?  Will it increase corporate and business participation, recruit new donors, and increase revenue in the form of net proceeds?  Will it identify and cultivate major gift prospects?  If not all of the above, consider another event that will produce these results.

How can you, as an Executive Director (E.D.) lead change in your organization?  The basis for implementing change is something we do everyday – relate.  It is about connecting, interacting and communicating.  The bottom line, for better or worse, is how you form relationships.  Building trusting relationships with your staff is the core matter in changing the behavior of people.  This concept overrides many previously held beliefs that suggest we restructure or change systems to get results in our organizations.  These functions are valuable, and without them no action can be accomplished - but not without first instilling hope and creating affiliations that are inclusive.

In the January 2007 issue of FEO, ESC consultant Hal Gordy discussed essential qualities of leadership, and stressed the role of the executive leader as accomplishing work through others.  This issue will discuss how that is done.  By effectively delegating the responsibility of carrying out tasks, the leader/manager will:
  • Allow staff to handle more complex activities and increase the scope of the manager’s control.
  • Expand a subordinate’s skills and contribute to his/her professional development.
  • Reduce an organization’s dependence on a limited number of key individuals.
  • Enable an agency to grow and expand its capabilities.

It is important for the interviewer(s) to understand that interviewing is a two-way process.  First, the candidate is obtaining information and impressions about the agency and the job.  Does the agency, its mission, culture, organizational structure, job specifications, etc. fit the needs and expectations of the candidate?  Second, the interviewer(s) for the agency is trying to obtain information and impressions about the candidate.  Early in the interview it’s helpful to ask what the candidate knows about the agency.  How did the candidate learn of this information or gain any impressions (friends, website, agency materials, colleagues, networks, etc.)?  While it is important to learn of candidate’s fit to the agency’s mission, it is vital to discuss how the mission is implemented in practice by the agency.

There has been a strong focus on strategic planning, both in the business world and in the nonprofit community.  Many articles, reference books and other sources stress the need for assessing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges that an organization should address in devising strategies for furthering the entity’s mission and vision.  Techniques are described in some of these sources for developing action plans to implement these strategies.  The same techniques are generally applicable to formulating a business or operating plan.  However, many organizations in both the profit and nonprofit spheres seem to have difficulty either in appreciating the importance of having an operating plan or knowing how to generate and implement one.  This is particularly the case for nonprofit agencies in their formative stages (which can sometimes last for years).

A growing body of scientific research shows that multi-tasking can make you less efficient. Trying to do two or three things at once, or in quick succession, can take longer overall than doing them one at a time--and may leave you with reduced brainpower to perform each task.  “People who are multi-tasking too much experience various warning signs,” says David Myer of the University of Michigan.  “Short-term memory problems can be one.  Intense multi-tasking can also induce a stress response, an adrenaline rush that when prolonged can damage cells that form new memory. Other red flags are changes in your ability to concentrate or gaps in your attentiveness.”

Addressing Legal Issues Starts with the Board of Directors

“First Kill All the Lawyers.” This partial quote from Shakespeare conveys the exact opposite idea the Bard intended, since it omits the part about the chaos that would befall society if there were no attorneys.  I was at a meeting recently with an Executive Director of a nonprofit and her Board Chair-elect, who was an attorney, and the thought occurred to me how fortunate that organization was to have someone with legal training in that position.  There are few areas of operating a profit-making entity or a nonprofit that do not have the potential for legal ramifications and problems.  That is also true for the activities of the Board of Directors.  That being the case, nonprofits would be wise to have at least one attorney on their Board of Directors, or have ready access to one or more legal advisors to whom they can look for advice about whether or not a problem exists.
