Board Development

Communities Actively Living Independent and Free (CALIF) strives to improve the policies and services that concern people with disabilities. CALIF works to empower the disability community, addressing discrimination, encouraging meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in mainstream activities, and providing core services that meet critical needs of persons with disabilities.

The Project

CALIF tapped into ESC’s expertise as they were experiencing growing pains. Through executive coaching with a specific focus on Board development, CALIF’s Executive Director was able to successfully steer her organization toward success.

ESC’s Board Development programs provide close consultation to a nonprofit organization’s Board chair, executive director, or both, enabling them to successfully address issues such as recruitment, planning, governance, oversight, leadership development, and succession planning. Working together with executive leadership and Board members to strengthen their partnership, ESC helps client agencies build a foundation for sustainable, effective organizational governance.

The Result

In our 7th year, while CALIF was abuzz with activity, I was feeling the tremendous weight of organizational growth and fund development. My Board was struggling with poor attendance and a crisis of leadership. As an Executive Director, I was close to burnout when I got the call from ESC.

I was delighted at what resources ESC had to offer us — life-giving resources we so desperately needed. My executive coach helped assess my situation, strengths, and weaknesses. Our sessions were intense and reflective, with a balance of constructive criticism and proactive problem-solving. My coach taught me how to strengthen my Board of Directors and be the kind of leader that empowers them to take their responsibilities to a higher level.

Our year together went by quickly, but after she left, I felt tremendously strengthened with a surer path as I continued implementing what we had put together.
