Assistance League

Board Development

Assistance League is a national nonprofit organization that puts caring and commitment into action through community-based philanthropic programs. Assistance League’s 26,000 member volunteers are what make the organization so remarkable. Each one is incredibly generous, imaginative and highly motivated to effect change in their communities because they have a personal stake in the outcome. And each one has the spirit to get the job done, whatever it is and whatever it takes.

The Project

Assistance League called on ESC’s expertise to work with its national board of directors. Two ESC consultants evaluated the internal operating structure of the organization to determine its fit with their strategic priorities. They also assessed the volunteer leadership structure of the organization, both its board of directors and a key committee of national volunteers that works directly with the organization’s 122 member chapters. ESC recommended solutions based on their findings and provided executive coaching and implementation support.

ESC’s Board Coaching program provides consultation to a nonprofit organization’s board of directors for a full year. ESC consultants may assist the board with recruitment, planning, governance, fiscal oversight, succession planning and leadership development.

The Result

This is the second time the national organization of Assistance League has called upon the volunteers of ESC to offer outside expertise.

Assistance League benefited from the detailed information that was provided to us. As a result of the consultants’ recommendations, the board took a new look at the way it uses the strategic plan. In addition, the lack of an extensive training program for newer national volunteers resulted in an expanded, detailed training process. Also, the low recognition by the public for the organization’s philanthropic work pushed the board to address this ongoing concern. The result has been a commitment to the largest outside marketing campaign ever entered into by Assistance League.

This was possible largely because all 50 volunteers that the ESC team worked with for over a year felt the team’s open manner and professionalism provided an opportunity to speak freely, share concerns and feel proud of the things ESC identified as our successes.
